What Are The Main Packaging Methods Used For Coffin Shipments?

In the coffin export industry, packaging solutions directly affect the safety of goods during long-distance transportation and are a key focus for customers in export orders. Coffins are large, irregularly shaped products, bulky and heavy. Some solid wood coffins have painted surfaces, making them highly susceptible to scratches, bumps, and warping due to moisture. Therefore, the packaging must be chosen based on the transportation method, material type, and the requirements of the importing country.

Currently, the most common packaging for coffin shipments is a solid wood fumigated pallet + multi-layer protective cardboard box. The coffin is first wrapped with stretch film to isolate moisture and dust, and hard corner protectors are added to the edges to prevent damage during lifting and handling. After protection, the coffin is secured to the fumigated wooden pallet, which must have a fumigation certificate to meet the quarantine requirements of customs in Europe and the United States for wooden packaging, preventing the goods from being detained upon arrival at the port. This packaging method is moderately costly, convenient for loading and unloading, suitable for container shipping, and is the preferred choice for regular bulk orders.

For high-end solid wood coffins and carved coffins with exquisitely painted surfaces, fumigation-free plywood crates are used for packaging. The coffin is placed entirely in a custom-made, sealed crate, filled with foam and pearl cotton for cushioning, resulting in greater rigidity and outstanding impact resistance. Fumigation-free crates require no additional fumigation treatment, simplifying customs clearance and are often used for high-value orders, but they are more expensive and take up more container space.

For lightweight products such as biodegradable and environmentally friendly coffins and bamboo coffins, thickened corrugated cardboard boxes paired with pallets can be used for packaging. The product is completely wrapped with bubble wrap, and the cardboard box is reinforced with straps, resulting in a lightweight and efficient loading system. However, this packaging has limited impact resistance and is generally suitable for short-distance transport or air freight; it is rarely used alone for long-distance sea freight.

Regardless of the packaging method chosen, securing the coffin is crucial. Plastic strapping is typically used to firmly secure the coffin to the pallet to prevent shifting during sea transport. Export packaging also requires printing of shipping marks, product information, and fragile markings on the outer box; some countries require moisture-proof warnings.
