Solid wood boards should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated environment. Because wood is hygroscopic and sensitive to fluctuations in air humidity, prolonged exposure to damp conditions can lead to issues such as swelling, warping, and mold growth. Therefore, the storage area must be kept free of standing water and excessive humidity, with good airflow maintained to ensure the stability of the material's properties.
Solid wood boards should be protected from prolonged, direct sunlight during storage. Intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation and temperature fluctuations can cause surface discoloration and cracking, compromising both the board's appearance and its performance. Storage areas should be shaded; if protective coverings are used, care must be taken to ensure continued ventilation to prevent moisture buildup underneath.
When stacking solid wood boards, ensure the stack is level and avoid uneven weight distribution. Boards should generally be laid flat and supported by dunnage (such as wooden spacers) to keep them elevated off the ground and protect them from ground-level moisture. Additionally, stacks should not be piled too high, as excessive pressure can cause the boards to bend or warp.
Measures should also be taken to prevent pest infestations and contamination during storage. Before storage, inspect the boards for signs of insect damage or cracks, and avoid placing them near corrosive or contaminating materials. Proper control of temperature, humidity, and storage methods can effectively extend the service life of solid wood boards while maintaining their quality and performance.
